Happy Holidays-

Time seems to be flying quickly by!  It is already December and we are already having our third reading council meeting!  We have had wonderful presenters in September and October.  Dr. Mary Ellen Vogt taught us how academic vocabulary plays an important role in a student’s understanding of the content.  In addition, Nicki Clausen-Grace and Michelle Kelley presented on the importance of text features and how students use these features to bring understanding to the content.

This month’s speaker will be no exception to our star studded line up this year.  Dr. Richard Allington will be presenting on “What Research Really Says about Teaching Reading”.  Through just two of his works, Dr. Allington has brought us sound research behind what really matters for struggling readers as well as effective implementation of Response to Intervention.  Dr. Allington has practical and realistic advice for educators.   This is one meeting you do not want to miss!

This month’s speaker is a true gift to the Duval County Reading Council.  The University of North Florida, College of Education, is sponsoring Dr. Richard Allington for this month’s meeting.  We are truly appreciative of the partnership that Dr. Lunetta Williams has spearheaded on behalf of UNF.

Mark your calendars now for children’s author, Carmen Agra Deedy, on January 5^th because before you know it the New Year will be here!  Time flies when you are having fun!
